A Little About My Story

My journey to becoming a naturopath starting long before I undertook my bachelor's degree. I’ve always been drawn to nature, picking herbs from the garden, and making concoctions with the berries from our Lilly Pilly trees as a child. We grew up barefooted, plates full of veggies and plenty of sunshine.

I struggled for many years with female reproductive issues from a young age, baffling many doctors and specialists. While the medical world offered surgery and medications, I thought there had to be a better answer. I saw a naturopath and an acupuncturist, both of whom changed my life. Years later this led me to study a Bachelor of Health Science, majoring in Naturopathy. On my journey I also suffered from fertility issues. I was unable to conceive for many years after my first born. Although this was a very trying time, as anyone struggling with infertility would know, I also grew immensely from this experience. It gave me a deeper understanding of what women and men go through, as individuals and couples.

My interest in herbal medicine runs deeps, during my studies these were my favourite subjects. I love the healing properties that herbs can bring, they can be very powerful tools. The beauty of herbs is the broad range of actions and the individualisation they give. I honestly love nothing more than standing in my dispensary and choosing the perfect combination for my patient's needs. Each liquid herbal blend varies from the next and the possibilities are endless.

Utilising nutrition is equally as valuable in my practice. With the birth of my first-born nutrition become my number one priority. Getting into the kitchen and creating nutritious and tasty kid friendly food became part of my routine. Using food as medicine is a valuable resource for treating many health complaints, and it never ceases to amaze me the impact a few changes can bring to people's lives.

I strongly believe that in addition to the knowledge gained from my degree and ongoing studies, it is my personal experiences that have given me the empathy and skills to best serve my patients.

I love working with women to help them find or rediscover their unique potential, to heal and grow beyond boundaries. Some areas of particular interest include female reproduction conditions, including PCOS and endometriosis; fertility; preconception, pregnancy and postpartum; infant health, including common newborn complaints and food introduction; children's nutrition; gastrointestinal health, including digestive complaints, IBS, infections, food intolerances etc.; nervous systems conditions, including stress and burnout, anxiety, depression, fatigue and sleep disorders.

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to wellness based on the principle that the body has the inherent ability to heal itself. Using the healing power of nature and gentle therapeutic techniques, the body, mind and emotions are supported during this process. It is both an art and a science, using scientific evidence as well as traditional knowledge in practice.

Naturopathy encompasses a variety of treatment methods including:

• Nutritional and Herbal Medicine to help prevent and manage various illnesses
• Dietary and Nutritional advice for restoration of balance, detoxification and prevention of disease
• Lifestyle advice to promote well-being, reduce stress and improve energy and vitality

Naturopathic case-taking often uncovers dis-ease long before it has become a diagnosable pathology. Naturopathy can alleviate a wide range of acute and chronic conditions and is suitable for all ages. Some of the more common conditions treated include fatigue, stress related ailments, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, metabolic disorders, preconception and pregnancy and general aches and pains. However, you do not need to be unwell to benefit from Naturopathy and it is a great tool to use as preventative medicine!

The Seven Principles of Naturopathy

1. The Healing Power of Nature - Vis Medicatrix Naturae
Naturopathy recognises that all living systems have an innate ability to heal it-self. Our vital force promotes self-cleansing, self-repair, and thus self-healing. The Naturopaths role is to facilitate this natural process.

2. Treat the Cause - Tolle Causam
Naturopaths seek to identify and remove the underlying cause of disease, rather than relieving symptoms alone.

3. First Do No Harm - Primum Non Nocere
Naturopaths use the least force necessary to assist in the restoration of health.

4. Treat the Whole Person
Naturopaths treat everyone holistically, taking into account the physical, mental, emotional, social, and environmental factors that make up the total state of health.

5. Doctor as Teacher - Docere
The original meaning of the word "doctor" is teacher. Naturopaths educate their patients by empowering, encouraging and motivating patients to assume self-responsibility for their health by adopting a healthy attitude, lifestyle and diet.

6. Preventative Medicine
The age old saying "Prevention is better than cure" is true! Naturopaths health approach is all about preventing minor illnesses to avoid the development of more serious diseases. They achieve this by educating and encouraging people about life habits that support health.

7. Wellness
A Naturopaths role is to help the patient establish and maintain optimum health and balance by promoting wellness.
